Peterson Afb Dental Clinic - The design of the new facility at the $16 million Peterson AFB dental clinic enables more efficient economics of movement between providers, staff and patients, enabling more cost-effective patient care. All 20 dental treatment rooms have been designed in a mixed way to enable left and right handed practitioners to provide unhindered care. There is also a designated oral surgery area within the building and a small laboratory to assist everyone at the centre. An increase in the number of square pieces allows the clinic to use computer-aided design technology in the laboratory, speeding up the process of creating dentures and allowing the modern warfighter to return to service more quickly.

Having achieved LEED 3.0 Silver certification, the new clinic is the first dental clinic in the Air Force to be built with a geothermal heating and cooling system. It includes improved infection control measures, new central lighting controls, improved physical security protection, and increased climate control that reduces energy costs by 40% and water use by 48% compared to the baseline.

The curved architectural design of the structure orients the building towards Pikes Peak and the Rockies. The views enhance the aesthetics of the dental treatment room and position the room's windows towards the sun for natural light. This natural light allows dentures to be made more effectively because dental assistants can better match the color of the client's teeth.

Another advantage of the new clinic is the central equipment processing center design. The CIPC sterilizes equipment for use in medical procedures not only for the dental clinic, but also sterilizes equipment for the hospital located on the base and those centers located in the local area: Schriever AFB, Fort Carson and the Air Force Academy.

The superstructure of the building consists of structural steel wide flange members and steel beams with moment frames and bracings as lateral resisting members. Anti-terrorist force protection (AT/FP) design was also undertaken for window supports and external wall elements within conventional safe distances. The plumbing system contains a complex array of medical gases and the electrical design uses a central battery system for continuous facility service in the event of a power outage, and includes solar tubes and LED lighting for the best possible sustainable design for illuminating the framework.

"When I was watching the 21st DS mission, I was blown away," Bannister said. "You have 41 different units that you support, in 22 different locations, in seven countries, spanning 13 time zones ... that really makes you one of our squadrons most diverse dental in the Air Force Medical Service, which should make you proud. It also adds significant mission complexity to tracking and ensuring that everything you serve is dentally ready.

The new 16,000 square foot LEED Gold certified clinic includes 19 ambidextrous treatment rooms, all facing the mountains, as well as a central instrument processing center, a designated area for performing oral surgeries, and laboratory space with computer aided design technology. in the laboratory which enables staff to speed up the process of creating dental prostheses.

"I think it's important to understand where the Department of Defense is focused and how the 21st Space Wing has really embraced the charge," Bannister said. “For example, Fort Carson currently does not have dedicated dental lab personnel, but they can accomplish their mission by leveraging our lab team at 21st. That's what we need to do in the future: yes, it's important to have uniformed airmen and soldiers and sailors, but how do we leverage everyone's expertise in the future? The 21st Dental Squadron doesn't just support Airmen at Peterson AFB, you support our tri-service team in Colorado Springs and across the country. I feel it's important that everyone recognizes the breadth of that support."

In addition, the building is heated and cooled by an energy-efficient geothermal well field containing 27 wells, each 400 feet deep. The water circulating from these springs maintains a constant temperature of 60 degrees, which can be used for cooling and heating.

With a host of new equipment and upgrades, leaders reminded those present at the ceremony that the most important element of the building was not measured against a contract.

"But I also have to mention the most remarkable and essential element of this new building...the part that really makes it work as it should," said Colonel Christopher Vaughn, commander of the 21st Medical Group. “It's the airmen who work within its walls, offering first class dental capabilities. This noble work is how they prepare the Air Force's greatest asset - the medical maintenance of the human weapons system - to ensure that service members are ready to serve our nation's calling, at home and on the ground. Dentists, dental technicians, administrative professionals and other mission partners, work in a highly synchronized manner, to ensure that this capability is delivered without fail. And although this facility is new, the degree of precision with which the 21st Dental Squadron operates is standard practice ... and this standard, with this modern infrastructure makes the moment this is truly exceptional.

The facility is expected to accommodate 15,000 patients each year and is one of a medical campus of 10 buildings spread geographically across three military installations that provide healthcare and mission support for more than 25,000 of active duty members, retirees and family members of Defense Department beneficiaries of the 21st Space Wing. , the 50th Space Wing and the Colorado Springs community.
