With the Basic Living Allowance (BAS) increase, soldiers will now receive more money each month for to help pool for food costs. From January 1, the BAS will rise by 11.2%, the biggest rise in two decades.

The living allowance is a monthly allowance that helps cover the cost of food and meals. The amount a person receives is not linked to their dependent status or pay grade. BAS rates are adjusted annually to reflect changes in food prices as measured by the Department of Agriculture. However, expenses are not paid to family members.

Those eligible for BAS include enlisted and commissioned personnel serving in the Navy, Air Force, Air Force, Navy and Army. Officers are not eligible to receive BAS when they are absent for more than 24 hours or on extra leave. Listed employees may also qualify for continued BAS entitlement in addition to the following:

Also, the BAS is not issued to any service member who is deployed or engaged in a field training exercise. During training, units provide food to service members.

The change will give officers $31.39 more per month and enlisted members will receive $45.58 more per month, making this the first time the Basic Living Allowance has topped $300.

The biggest increase since 2002 comes as a result of global inflation, and industry officials don't expect high food inflation to disappear anytime soon. In response, the military has seen an increase in Basic Housing Allowance. The 2023 budget request also pushed for a 4.6 percent wage increase. Another emphasis is on a new basic needs allowance to give more money to troops who make less than 130 percent of the federal poverty guidelines. O-6 Pay Limits: Base pay for O-6 and below is limited by performance schedule level V effective in calendar year 2023.

Combat Zone Tax Exemption for Officers: Combat zone tax exemption for O-1 and above is based on the basic rate of pay shown in Note 3 plus live fire pay or imminent danger pay, which is 225.00 $ per month (divisible).
