If you've ever thought about joining the largest branch of the military, you've probably wondered what the benefits are...PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The streets outside the east gate will soon host new traffic patterns, signs, and other features designed to make driving safer, as part of a collaboration between the 21st Squadron of Civil Engineers and the city of Colorado Springs.

"Staff and leadership have received numerous complaints from base staff and members of the public regarding safety and the sudden increase in the number and severity of accidents in the area," said Glenn Messke, base planner for the 21st CES.

"Peterson Fire and Emergency Services have responded to multiple vehicle accidents at the east gate," said Ron Meyers, assistant fire chief of the 21st CES. He provided information about four specific incidents, the most serious being a five-car/truck accident with eight occupants, four of whom were hospitalized with multiple injuries.

Marksheffel Road, the road that accesses the east gate, hosts high-speed traffic that frequently stops at the entrance. Vehicles regularly backtrack into the southbound right-turn lane attempting to enter the installation, including commercial vehicles that require extra time at the gate due to security requirements.

The current design forces faster southbound traffic into the left lane, sometimes with very little time to do so, increasing the potential for collisions. As the vehicles turn left towards the east gate and the vehicles attempt to exit the base onto Marksheffel Road, it is necessary to evaluate the current design and operation to reduce the high risk of traffic collisions.

To increase safety and reduce future accidents, installation leaders and civil engineering staff coordinate with Colorado Springs to provide assistance and handle repair suggestions designed by the city's traffic engineers. Messke indicated options at the moment include looking at temporary measures as well as permanent solutions to de-escalate the situation as quickly as possible.

The planned interim measures include reducing the speed limit along Marksheffel Road, increasing signs indicating the eastbound and commercial vehicle entrances, and adding a "gore zone" — a significant physical separation — between the south through lane and the right turning lane. Road. Messke said the traffic stop at the east gate as you exit the installation will be moved further east towards Marksheffel Road, giving drivers better visibility of traffic in the south turn lane.

The City hopes to implement these temporary mitigation measures as soon as possible as we approach the end of spring and experience increased traffic with the upcoming permanent change of station season.

Safety Improvements At Peterson Afb North Gate

As for ongoing efforts, the city is in the process of designing a new signalized intersection at the east gate in collaboration with Peterson AFB leadership and staff. The project, including design and funding, will be a joint effort between Colorado Springs and the Air Force.
